Cup Day is a big, busy, adult-heavy day, though. Here's how to decide if it suits your family, and how to make it work if it does.
What is the weather for the Caulfield Cup?
The MRC race day page lists 25°, sunny for 17 October. Check the Bureau of Meteorology Melbourne forecast on the morning, including the UV Index. In mid-October the UV in Melbourne often reaches levels where Cancer Council recommends sun protection, even on mild days.
How do I keep kids sun-safe at the races?
Follow the five SunSmart steps: slip, slop, slap, seek and slide. That means SPF 50+ broad-spectrum sunscreen reapplied every two hours, broad-brimmed hats, shade and sunglasses. Racecourse lawns have little natural shade, so plan breaks indoors or under cover. Our sun safety for kids guide has more detail.
Adults can also get a free skin check. Sportsbet is bringing the Australian Skin Cancer Foundation's 3D Skin Check Mobile Clinic to Gate 21 from 10:30am to 5:30pm. You'll need GA admission, and bookings are essential.
Where are the baby change facilities at Caulfield Racecourse?
The MRC lists baby change in the First Aid Building, next to the Race Day Office. There's another on the concourse level of the Members' Reserve, behind Tulloch Corner. First Aid is opposite the Owners Concierge.
Can you take a pram to Caulfield Racecourse?
The MRC doesn't publish a specific pram policy. It does list passenger lifts at the rear of the Rupert Clarke Grandstand, a dedicated accessible (DDA) entry and accessible bathrooms throughout the venue. Crowds are heavy on Cup Day, so a compact stroller is easier than a large pram. If you need certainty, call the MRC on 1300 GO RACE (1300 467 223).
What is the dress code for kids?
In the Members' Reserve, under-12s need "neat, smart-casual clothing in line with Members' standards". From age 12, children follow the adult code, which on Cup Day means jacket and tie for boys and formal wear for girls. General Admission has no dress code.
Can I bring snacks and drinks for the kids?
Light snacks are allowed. Commercially packaged drinks are not, unless required for infants. Bring empty non-glass bottles for everyone else and refill them at the free water stations at every bar.
What time should families arrive and leave?
Gates open at 10:30am, the first race is at 12:15pm and the Cup runs at 5:15pm AEDT. Many families come early, see a few races and the Mounting Yard, and leave before the late-afternoon peak. Wristbands and crowds are aimed at adults after the last race. The MRC asks anyone who looks under 25 for photo ID before issuing an over-18 wristband.
Getting there with kids
Caulfield Station is directly outside the racecourse, and free public parking is available in the Centre Car Park. Use the PTV journey planner for trains, trams and buses. Note that Cup Day was listed as sold out, with limited tickets at the gate. For quieter, cheaper options, see the MRC's Clip Clop Club family days, or use our family day out planner. Older kids who want to follow the race can read up on recent winners in the Caulfield Cup 2026 guide on Race.com.au.

What can kids see at the races?
The MRC's Carnival map lists a few spots that are good for curious kids. At the Mounting Yard, you can see horses, jockeys and connections up close before they head onto the track. At the Pre-Parade Ring, you get an early look at the horses before they walk to the Mounting Yard. The Winning Post is where every race is decided. Visit between races, when crowds thin, and agree on a meeting point in case anyone gets separated. The Caulfield Cup itself has been run since 1879, and 2026 is the 150th running. That's a good bit of history to share with older kids before the 5:15pm race.
