Overview

Monarto Zoo is one of the largest open-range zoos in the world spanning more than 1,500 hectares and is home to more than 50 species of exotic and native mammals, birds and reptiles.

The zoo is located 60 minutes (70 kilometres) from South Australia’s capital city Adelaide and is the gateway to the picturesque Murraylands region.

Monarto Zoo opened in 1983 as a breeding and pasture area. Since officially opening to the public in October 1993, Monarto Zoo is now home to more than 500 animals roaming in vistas as far as the eye can see. It’s an escape from the city that immerses visitors in a natural safari-style setting.

Over the years Monarto has celebrated outstanding breeding success and our captivating, quirky and unique animals have captured the hearts of our visitors.

Monarto Zoo is owned and operated by conservation charity, Zoos SA.

Monarto Zoo is a full day experience and a minimum of 4 - 5 hours is recommended for your visit.

Last entry 3pm.

Explore Monarto Zoo on foot and enjoy the fauna and flora using our 5 walking tracks available. Walking tracks range from easy to medium (20 to 90 minutes) and are suitable for robust pushers.

Zu-loop shuttles to wildlife platforms run at regular intervals

Keeper presentations are held daily.

Enjoyed Monarto. Went during school term so it was relatively quiet. Highly recommend the chimpanzee keeper talk, it was amazing to hear and also see how clever they are.. We did also see a slight tantrum from one who had missed out on a treat, great watching how human like they were in that moment.

Great family day for young kids. Awesome to see animals up close in their natural habitat. Easy parking, toilets and great nature playground too.

Our kids love both Monaro and Adelaide Zoos. We have had a zoo membership for 6 years now and it is the best investment we have made! The kids love going and seeing all the different animals and each time we learn and do something new. They have even enjoyed the walking tracks around Monaro.

Had a wonderful day out with a group of 3-4 year olds, would highly recommend this as a family or group of families day out

We went on a cold day, so my recommendation would be to dress to the conditions
