Overview

Hendrie Street Reserve in Park Holme is a regional playground with the first accessible playground in the region: Hendrie Street Reserve Inclusive Playground.

The reserve also features a large grassed area, 3 on 3 basketball and is adjacent to the Marion Outdoor Pool.

Consideration has been given to children who may have mobility issues, vision and hearing impairments and spectrum disorders such as autism and incorporates principles of inclusive play.

PLAYGROUND:

Fruit Crate Multistation - The tall climbing and sliding structure stands in the centre of the site with access for wheelchairs to the first level. The tall internal net challenges climbers that dare to ride the slide; the design of the net ensures the climber’s skills to reach the height of the top level. If children need a moment away from the hustle and bustle of the playground there's a sensory room off a ramp from the multistation where sound is diminished and they can do some calming art on the chalkboard (BYO chalk). In time a vine will grow over the arbour, adding to the secluded feel. The design is inspired by the agricultural history of the area and incorporates a secluded space behind the climbing wall. The bucket and pulley system encourages connected-play, teamwork and communication.

Sand and Water Play - Sensory seekers will love the water play areas and sandpit. A giant water corkscrew can be activated by turning the circular crank at the top, helping children develop motor skills. The water is elevated up to the top and recycled back down to the tap below. A lever pump is situated on opposite side of the water play area. On the other side to the corkscrew is the sandpit and a rocky river, providing two different sensory experiences.

Carousel - Take a spin on the ground-level carousel which is accessible to people with mobility impairments. Children of all abilities are able to connect and play together while spinning around.

Swings - There are a range of different swings all under bright green shade sails. The Expression Swing allows you to experience swinging with your infant/toddler. The usual baby swing a standard swing are provided. The basket swing allows kids of different abilities to swing and socialise and the unique 3-bay rope swing allows friends to swing together in unison.

Bull Rider - The 3-armed bull rider allows 6 children to rock back and forth together, while being able to look at each other and enjoy the fun together.

Bike Track - A ramped and twisting 40m bike track is in the north-western corner of the playground. The ramped and hilly mounds make this circuit a more challenging-than the average track.
