The National Railway Museum also operates a magical 2km steam train ride along the dunes from Semaphore Jetty to Port Malcolm and return.

The railway operates as follows:

SASMEE (South Australian Society of Model and Experimental Engineers) Park runs a variety of ride-on model steam trains. It is located at Millswood, and is open to the public on the first Sunday and third Saturday of each month.

MORPHETT VALE RAILWAY INC PUBLIC RUNNING DAYS – RIDE ON STEAM AND DIESEL LOCOMOTIVES (Morphett Vale)

PENFIELD PARK RAILWAY OPEN DAYS (Edinburgh)

The ride on miniature railway has a total track length of about 1.9Kms supporting both 7 ¼” and 5” gauge trains. After leaving the station the railway runs thru the outer edge of the park, crosses over itself via a gentle gradient and a steel bridge before passing thru a tunnel on its way back to the station.

ADELAIDE MINIATURE STEAM RAILWAY OPEN DAYS (Prospect)

The Adelaide Miniature Steam Railway Society (Railway Park) offers a facility where families can come together and enjoy an afternoon in pleasant surroundings. Take a trip back in time and experience the world when steam engines were the only way to travel. See miniature buildings and artifacts that add a touch of realism to the railway.

ROSEWORTHY RAILWAY CLUB OPEN DAYS (Roseworthy)

A Model Engineering club at Roseworthy with 1.2 km of 7-1/4″ gauge track. Regular public opening times on some Sundays and some Saturday evenings.

CLARE VALLEY MODEL ENGINEERS INC PUBLIC RUNNING DAYS (Clare)

The Copper Coast Old Machinery and Engineering Club is a historical machinery club, based in Kadina. It is also home to Copper Coast Rail, a minature railway that runs on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month, at the Farmshed Info Centre.

Barker, Strathalbyn, Goolwa & Victor Harbor. The SteamRanger Heritage Railway operates a number of different heritage steam and diesel hauled tourist trains between Mt Barker in the Adelaide Hills, up over the crest of the southern Mt Lofty Ranges, down to Strathalbyn and on through the coastal holiday towns of Goolwa and Port Elliot to the tourist resort town of Victor Harbor.

PICHI RICHI RAILWAY

Pichi Richi Railway is a heritage railway, delighting families with scenic trips through the timeless Flinders Ranges since 1974. Heritage trains run past breathtaking Flinders Ranges scenery, on the last operating section of the original “Old Ghan route”. Open weekends from March – November each year, with extra weekday trains during School Holidays.

CROYDON PLAYGROUND (TRAIN PARK)

I’m sure ours isn’t the only family that has fondly renamed Croydon Playground, “the train park”. Sitting right next to the Croydon Train Station, it’s perfect for the kids who want to hop on the train to get there.

PRINCESS MARGARET PLAYGROUND

Located at Byron Road, Black Forest and very close to Clarence Park Railway Station, I am told on good authority that this is another playground renamed “the train park”. Little kids who love trains will be in awe of the trains whizzing by so close to the playground.

GEORGE T FISHER PLAYGROUND

Located on the Victor Harbor foreshore along Flinders Parade between the Causeway Plaza and the Soldiers Memorial Garden. There’s a great train to sit in and “drive”.The surrounding area is the entrance to the Granite Island causeway and is the hub for Victor Harbor’s tourist facilities and a drawcard for all visitors to the region.

THE LOOSE CABOOSE (Cafe)

The Bowden Railway Station, built in 1856 and heritage listed. It is Australia’s oldest railway station (pre-dated by Melbourne’s Flinders St station which was started in 1854 but not finished until 1910). The railway station is on Adelaide’s Outer Harbour line, placed at the end of a tree lined street off Port Road. The station is situated across the road from the Adelaide Entertainment Centre and is adjacent to the famous Governor Hindmarsh Hotel.

The owners have always loved Adelaide; old buildings; coffee; great food; atmosphere and creating spaces where people love to meet and have a memorable time. Despite its former dilapidated state, they have restored the Bowden Railway Station to its original glory in a way that is respectful of its surrounds and deep history, whilst adding amenities that breathe life back into the site – it’s evolved into a contemporary cafe that is welcoming, memorable and easy to enjoy.

TRAIN JOURNEYS

Which kid doesn’t like to jump on a train and just go for a ride for the sheer fun of it? Why not head to the Adelaide Railway Station, have a look around and jump back on the next train home. Another popular trip is up and down the Belair line with amazing scenery and tunnels.

ADELAIDE MODEL RAILWAY EXHIBITION

The annual Adelaide Model Railway Exhibition takes place on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend in June, where some of Adelaide’s Top Model Railway Clubs combine to present the Adelaide Model Railway Show.

A display of model trains of many scales and gauges with entertainment for families, train enthusiasts and model enthusiasts alike. Over 40 layouts, modelling demonstrations and trade stands.

Fantastic family day out and great value entertainment for this long weekend.
